HISTORY! ROMANCE!

Somber he travels a half-empty lifetime

Full only where pain is frozen and still

Onward thru goodbyes at edges of pavement

Waving downcast to plans unfulfilled

Watching the days drift and go out the window

Walking the night late when no one else goes

Standing by silent as one dreamy smile

(in echoes thru canyons out beyond the highway)

finds the adventuresome man-seeking child

History! Romance!

Once there were pages and knights

Kings and queens

All in bright colors

The uncommon light of their dreams

Stirring now somehow, ageless, young patterns play

Wistful then aimless and then overjoyed

Anticipating that each moment maybe like thunder comes

Rumbling down from horizons

Advancing these young stallions retake the land

Where boys playing army had plundered by hand

Without cannon fire without gangrene or spies

Battalions die laughing and retreat in sighs

And soon baby winks

Chubby mom is all happy

And even old daddy is saying hello

To lazy things (clouds)

Drinking up in the sky

AND HE'S IN LOVE WITH YOU

There he is again -- lurking.

Every time you look in his direction

you will see that man;

a glass of wine tied to his hand,

staring out from shadow-land.

He's so dirty now -- don't look his way -- it will hurt your eyes.

And he's in love with you,

that's what he is today.

I know him well,

and this one thing about him I can say:

he is no angel.

Soon he will give you a call

to get you face-to-face with him.

Slimy thing he is,

dragging you in and out and up and down

and through his passion.

Naked.  Passion.  Naked.

And whispering, "please, don't tell my brother about us!"

(chorus)

Some time ago we acted like the best of friends.

As boys in daylight we had games,

like brothers to play.

Yet in one afterglow

with dim light from the hallway to reveal it,

he was near my bed.  In fear then I let him come

and he would do things to me . . .

(chorus)

CAT

into the night it's like a cat

what do you think, what do you think of that

inside the animal is uncivilized

what will it take to make it satisfied?

he's lookin' for you and where are you at

he wants to make you part of his story

and what you're keeping underneath your hat

wait til the morning to reveal it please.

you laugh out loud, you sing a song

stand, stare and wonder, then move along.

and when he catches up with you he's gonna play

and lay with you there in the sack

man what are you thinkin' don't you think like that!

it's just a common thing:  a flirt, a cat.

you laugh out loud, you sing a song

stand stare and wonder, then move along.

it's just a common thing:  a flirt, a cat

POETS

poets. poets.

poets have always put it like this:

love is a flower,

a smile and a kiss.

poets have always put it like this:

forever darling, in heavenly bliss.

forever darling - now who can resist

so great a temptation is love made of this

forever my darling, i'll always be true

forever faithful to love only you

poets have always put it like this:

love is a flower, a smile and a kiss

forever darling, now who can resist

so great a temptation is love made of this

poets. poets. poets. poets!

WHAT ARE THESE CLOUDS

(steady rain and thunder accompany throughout)

you come here and now

soon to be leaving or something

and you've heard about

the so-many ways of being maybe one thing.

have you been locked out?

or have you lived in fear?

I don't mean to get personal, but...

what are these clouds doing here?

what are these clouds, what's this rain about

this feeling, i can do without

when you're making love

are you putting out in your mind

all the images of

the lover you wish you could find

life-like in a backroom

touchin' til it happens

and if things go wrong does it mean

that you never can have him?

(When things go wrong in a dream,

are you really unhappy?)

what are these clouds, what's this rain about

this feeling i can do without

[repeat from top and fade]

TRAIN-TO-THE-MOUNTAIN SONG

I want to go to the mountains

I want to go their soon

I want to know what time I should be here and then

what I should bring along with me

I have been hard-working all year long

producing for a better nation

left-handed right-handed two-handed strong

now here I am at the station

I want to go to the mountains

I want to go there soon

I want to know what time I should be here and then

what I should bring along with me

what does your hat say

you are responsible for

hey, stationmaster, say it

everyone now - All aboard!

there was a train to the mountains

my father lived laying track along ties

there was a train to the mountains and now . . .

there was a train to the mountains and now . . .

what does your hat say you are responsible for

once there were trains to the mountains

we used to play hide and seek by the line

where stock rolling by now has no face or name

just goods, this and that for the factory game

while passengers rot on the vine

I want to go to the mountains

relaxed even with kids who run down the aisles

I want to know if it's too much to ask

for big bombardiers to make trains for awhile

what does your hat say you are responsible for

I have been walking for miles today

waving to friends driving by

no bicycle, bus and no car I don't mind

but some days head-down I walk slowly and sigh

I want to go to the mountains

I want to go there soon

I want to know what time I should be here and then

what I should bring along with me.

THE NIGHT SHIFT

The night shift, oh yes, the night shift;

I see people as they crawl along;

oh it makes me wonder – am I really all alone

on the night shift

I see the derelicts,

tossing and turning on the cold concrete;

it feels like they're trying to make their beds fit;

oh it makes me wonder – do they ever get to sleep

on the night shift.

Yeah, this is a ghost town;

the streets all roll away at sundown;

everything that moves seems down and out;

like domestics on their way hey hey

in the night shift.

Working the night shift

I'm thinking' that I'm making up verse;

stretching for some concentration;

and it makes me wonder

does anybody got it any worse than me

on the night shift.

bah-dah-bah-dah-bah-dah-bah-dah-bah-dah

bah-dah-bah-dah-bah-dah-bah-dah-bah-dah

bah-dah-bah-dah-bah-dah-bah-dah-bah-dah

bah-dah-bah-dah-bah-dah-bah-dah-bah-dah

And my midnight comes at high noon,

when I close my eyes in my room;

sleeping it off until the streets are lit;

sleeping in off until the night shift.

MARS NEEDS WOMEN

Mars needs women,

mars needs women

come on you women, we're

taking you to mars

our planet has dried up

the girls we once knew

the sun has fried them now

what can we do?

Mars needs women

Mars needs women

Mars needs women

wah-dah-dah-wah-wah-wah

you can't get babies

from men fuckin' men

it drives us crazy as we

try and try again

yeah, mars needs women

mars needs women

mars needs women

wah-dah-dah-wah-wah-wah

and we will not continue

without proper sex

on mars the women have become

tyrannosaurus rex

we come to earth for peace

with female volunteers

our reputations must be saved

on mars there are no queers

hey, mars needs women

mars needs women

mars needs women

wah-dah-dah-wah-wah-wah

ABOUT "MARS NEEDS WOMEN"

New York Times (12/19/04) "Larry Buchanan, a film director who went from making inspirational films for Oral Roberts to turning out a spate of lurid, awful B movies, among them Zontar, the Thing From Venus, The Eye Creatures and, most famously, Mars Needs Women, died on December 2 in Tucson, Ariz." The obituary revealed a few odd facts about Mr. Buchanan's career, and ended as follows: "Perhaps not surprising given their cost, nearly all of Mr. Buchanan's films made money. He kept overhead low by serving as producer, screenwriter, editor and occasionally voice-over narrator. But he should have hired a proofreader. When The Eye Creatures (1965) was re-released some years later, its opening credits proudly displayed the film's new title. It read, in very large letters, Attack of the the Eye Creatures.

Flashback to 1981 – My friend E.A. Srere was at my house in East Austin. We were waiting for others to come to practice for my band's first anniversary. Mars Needs Women was playing on tv. What a hoot. The plot was that all the water on Mars had evaporated and all of Mars' women had died off. So some of the Martians came to earth seeking female volunteers to come back with them and help repopulate their shriveling race. The spacesuit costumes were nothing more than wetsuits. E.A. said, "somebody needs to write a theme song for this movie!" So I did, and Buddy Womack added the music later. I wrote it in about 10 minutes. It was probably my favorite song to perform (and I still can, if I'm alone in my car) and one that likes to be loud (it's quite a crazy number). Mars Needs Women & Other Big Hits is the title of STB's unspectacular unworldwide un-hit CD. When you listen to it (as you must upon reading this) you'll notice a peculiar warble that punctuates each chorus - it wasn't done with special effects. While the whole song is homage to the film, the warble is supposed to mimic either being under-water or drowning – reflecting that silly wetsuit space gear. The only way to tell that these guys were Martians was when the dialogue said that they were.

Anyway . . . so it was that on Dec. 2, 2004, "Schlockmeister" Larry Buchanan died of complications from a collapsed lung (maybe his wetsuit sprung a leak).

Pathetically, back in the 1980s, many folks hereabouts thought that I wrote Mars Needs Women as a misogynist. It's too bad that not enough people could appreciate the song for the joy it was intended to impart.

SHOOT 'EM DOWN

Look at you now as you totter on a wall

Ready to break and willing to fall

What can you say and how will they take it

Anybody out there now who thinks they can't make it

[Well, don't you know the rules are just a social game

Don't you know the rules are just a little insane

Shoot 'em down (1-2-3) (x3)

Shoot 'em down shoot 'em down shoot 'em down]

Sit watching people and some people turn you on

Run-run to your bed

and think about them until dawn

Getting up the nerve ain't easy with things in the way

Anybody out there wanna try it today

[chorus]

It's there on your mind – why do you hold it back

You can play by it the book or you can jump the track

Who's got the time to wait and what's exactly right

Anybody out there wanna try it tonight

[chorus]

FACTORY BOY

I didn't get too hot in school

I couldn't handle educational tools

Somebody told me I could be used

Working for the men in the factory

And now I'm helping them build cars

By drilling holes for the dashboards

Better getting greasy on a job like this

Than frying with the steel and getting covered with ash

I wake up early for the swing shift

Roll on my baby how I love that woman

She does what I tell her yes she minds real well

Never hear that lady yelling back at me

My buddies on the line think they're doing time

Only drugs make them happy

I'm high on thanks for what is mine

And for the red white and blue that shine

Above the factory

DO THE JERK

[With Alin Black]

When your girl ain't home and you're all alone, do the jerk

When a magazine puts a lump in your jeans, do the jerk.

Do ther jerk whenever you feel life is doin' the jerk.

When your love life's gone terribly wrong, do the jerk.

just sit on the can and grease up your hands, do the jerk.

Do the jerk whenever you want to do the jerk.

bop, bop, bop-shoo-wop (x 4)

oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh

bop bop shoo-wop

When you're at the movies, not feelin' groovy, do the jerk.

and when you're steady date wants to hesitate, do the jerk.

Do the jerk a lot but don't get caught doin' the jerk.

bop, bop, bop-shoo-wop (x 4)

oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh

bop bop shoo-wop

Some people rock.

Some people roll.

Some people work.

Some people burp.

Well you can rock and roll and work and burp

but everybody does the jerk.

You can rock and roll and work and burp

but everybody does the jerk!

bop bop shoo - aaaaaah!

HAPPY WANDERER

I was a happy wanderer,

carried on like rivers flow

thru city and town

thru hill and dale

I would roll

I was a happy wanderer

I looked at the skies

I listened to waves

noticing flowers as they come and go

and with my friends

so much to say

about how things always turn out okay

I was a happy wanderer

My spirit set on wings to fly

over mountains

over seas

into unknown

terr-i-to-ries

I was a happy wanderer

I looked at the waves

I listened to skies

And I'd stay for hours

idle was I

and from the raven black of night

I never hid myself from sight

until in one town

I found me set down

by the meandering river

that cast me aside from it's flow

and with my friends all walking away

words I called to them left each one to say

"I don't know."

I was

a happy

wanderer

Now I wander, day and night

all in circles, out of sight

and to myself, not much to say

for things seem to turn out any old way

still I wander, night and day

in circles, where the light is gray

and to myself, so much to say

how did I let things turn out this way

I was a happy wanderer

living as the breezes blow

looking at skies

listening to waves

noticing flowers – look – they come and they go

and to fewer friends having not much to say

"I don't know if things are really okay"

I was a happy wanderer

set my spirit free to fly

over mountains

over seas

into unknown terr-i-to-ries

looking at waves

ears to the sky

craving the moments that now pass me by

WHY WE BITCH

We got the good life so why do we bitch.

We take it easy so we'll never be rich.

We got it made and time is a breeze.

We'd like to forget what we don't like to see.

We get reactions, that gets our heads high.

When trouble comes we can only live or die.

But when we see what some people do,

it gets in our way and that's not what we're into.

So we Bitch! Bitch! Bitch! Bitch!

Bitch bitch bitch bitch bitch

'cause it's insane!

We don't have answers because it's all been said:

the eternal conquest of the eternal dead.

What we get sold just melts into lies.

So what's the point, and who's asking us why we bitch!

All we can be is independent and strong

and true to the feelings that we write in our songs.

And if all we can do is stand here and scream,

then let's spill out our guts now

do you know what we mean when we bitch?

BLOCK PEOPLE

I don't know why that woman's so "oh dear"

Oh how she cries without a tear

Maybe baby, maybe baby,

maybe baby's seen enough.

Somebody else is moving upstairs;

they're dragging stuff around like nobody cares.

Talking in circles; talking in squares;

they talk in circles way out there.

(bridge)

It may come as a shock

maybe like a little surprise

people on my block are

healthy wealthy and wise

What about that guy running inside?

You know the one who looks like he has been fried.

I'll bet he always, I'll bet he always,

I'll bet he always wears it thin.

The people on my block—they're doing just fine;

they keep their houses not uptight;

they look in after mine.

They teach their kids, too, to help and be kind.

The people on my block are doing just fine.

STRANGER IN TOWN

Stranger's in town can you feel it now?

Knife's in the mirror, soon the blood's gonna spill.

It isn't a woman, it isn't a man.

It's a stranger in town, it's getting Dressed to Kill.

Stranger's in town – can you see him now?

Violins drivin' him thru hotel halls

He plays that game where the joker's insane.

Who'll be a pool of blood when he chops thru that wall?

Stranger's in town

He's out to get you

Stranger's in town

He's out the get you

Stranger's in town – it's a family to feed.

They just won't settle for U.S. choice ground

They'd rather have teenagers, yeah, hang 'em up on hooks and

prepare the feast to a chainsaw sound.

break

Stranger's in town, like the one you see in Phantasm.

He'll shrink your body down and ship it all the way to Mars, hey

You won't believe it when it happens to you

but there's a stranger in town and it's no movie star.

.

.

MIDNIGHT

you may call him midnight

and say he's sleeping his life away

you'll never see him excited by

the sunshine and the day

how he always hesitates

til it's been dark awhile

he likes to wait

for the right time to awake

and into the night escape

that's when midnight comes

that's when the lost at sea and the city life

can taste the milky way

midnight, my friend, is coming home today

you can tell it's midnight

by his jet-black hair you know it's him

and when he smiles, ooh that child

is wild like a heavenly sin.

and if you ask him, he will know

where in town the lovers go

and where the love-light can be found there

shining all around

that's how midnight finds his way

and how the lost at sea and city life

can find his milky way

midnight, my friend, is coming home today

it doesn't matter where he goes; doesn't matter who he sees.

Midnight always makes his way back home to me.

and when my friend midnight comes he brings a midnight smile

and the warmth of the midnight sun.

That's what midnight brings, when my friend midnight comes

or seek the things inside your homes

we live on the outside of the dome

we have lost the numbers that you gave us

no financial miracle can save us now

we live on the outside of the safety zone

we live on the outside of the dome

heroes we have none

in our religion

god is a verb

have you seen us traversing your lives

we endanger some of you because we can be wise

NEPTUNE

ol' man neptune livin in the livin in the sea

ol' man neptune livin in the livin in the sea

he is the king of the seaweed jungle

he is the king of the sea mon-key

ol' man neptune livin in the livin in the sea

this old man how he loves to fight

on the land is where his breakers pound

yet there amidst that punch he throws

so much peace can be found

ol' man neptune livin in the livin in the sea

the whales don't crowd him, for they know

he is big by far than them

and if some dolphin gets too smart,

ol' neptune gets a great white shart and then:

boom boom boom boom

boom boom boom boom boom

he is the king of the seaweed jungle

he is the king of the sea mon-key

(break to the tune of "The Navy Hymn")

eternal father strong to save

but not when neptune's pulling down

even little waters where the little kiddies play

is neptune's hunting ground.

ol' man neptune livin in the livin in the sea

this old man can't be all mean

he motions sometimes like a dream

and far beneath the ebbs and flows

ol' neptune laughs a lot because he knows:

we go up-and-down with him

like it or not that's how it goes

we go out-and-in like tides we come and go

ol' man neptune livin in the livin in the sea

WHEN THE MORNING COMES

(Sung as a round)

when the morning comes, when the morning comes

we'll be together when the morning comes

when the sun is high, when the sun is high

we'll be together when the sun is high

when the night is cold, when the night is cold

we'll be together when the night is cold

when the sun is high, when the morning comes

when the night is cold, we'll be as one

WHERE'S THE FIRE?

where's the fire

the one that used to light up every Saturday night

the fire you had coming out, the fire of feeling all right

where's the fire

the one that used to throw off sparks from your eyes

and flash at politicians and their passive wives

have you been emasculated

is the light now unable to revive within you

and bring back that fascination you had

with fire, desire, with fire of the finest kind

where's the fire

the fever, the heartbeat, the sweat running, bold

the fire of love that burns cold

when someone so close becomes somebody too hot to hold

that all consuming fire

we call romance

that trial by fire

we call romance

where's the fire

the torch you would carry for so far and so long

the fire

that's in smoky places where you'd go drinking, alone

faces in shadow, smoke in the beams

focused on her: in black to the nines, up there on stage

heartfelt, sincere, singing only sad songs;

and singing them to only you

(a flicker of flame comes to life in your soul

a glimmer of hope tha he will return)

that all consuming fire

that cannot in truth once it has burned truly die

aren't we all alive just to dance

and live through that trial by fire

that all-consuming fire

that scorches the earth for romance

Where's the fire?

It's there in the light now aglow in your song.

HOLD ME UP

hold me up

and steal me blind

got my hands over my head so

take my peace of mind

hold me up, hold me up, hold me up.

hold me up

tie a rope to my neck and give it a tug

pull it til i shatter then

sweep the pieces under the rug

hold me up, hold me up, hold me up.

sneak up on me

break into my place at night

take what you see

it makes no difference

everything is out in sight.

hold me up

follow me around just like a pup

come over here and lap it up

i'm in poverty so please hold me

hold me up.

hold me up

gimme a hug or gimme a drug

gimme everything you have

oh maybe that's enough

to hold me up.

ON THE RUN

I really blew it this time,

I feel like I got caught

I don't know what was the crime?

man I'm feeling' hot

everybody's after me,

shadows come to life

everybody's telling me,

"Stay out of sight!"

I'm on the run (run)

I'm on the run (run)

I'm on the run (run run run run run run)

I'm on the run

I used to have friends

I used to have lovers

now all that's at an end

there'll never be another

is that cop there on my trail

why does he look at me

oh my Christ I'm bound for jail

they'll throw a book at me
