Not that I care deeply about flags as symbols of authority or patriotism, but if you're gonna be that way, you should be that way right. My idea of what the flag represents goes back to one theory about how Egyptians depicted one concept of "god" with a hyroglyph of a flag, symbolising not a nation but the idea of being (Is God Is A Noun Or A Verb?). It was stated more complicatedly than that but my brain has erased the details. FROM WIKIPEDIA: Criminal penalties for certain acts of desecration to the flag were contained in Title 18 of the United States Code prior to 1989. The Supreme Court decision in Texas v. Johnson; June 21, 1989, held the statute unconstitutional. This statute was amended when the Flag Protection Act of 1989 (Oct. 28, 1989) imposed a fine and/or up to I year in prison for knowingly mutilating, defacing, physically defiling, maintaining on the floor or trampling upon any flag of the United States. The Flag Protection Act of 1989 was struck down by the Supreme Court decision, United States vs. Eichman, decided on June 11, 1990. FROM THE FLAG CODE: The flag should never be used for any advertising purpose. It should not be embroidered, printed, or otherwise impressed on such articles as cushions, handkerchiefs, napkins, boxes, or anything intended to be discarded after temporary use. Advertising signs should not be attached to the staff or halyard. The flag should not be used as part of a costume or athletic uniform, except that a flag patch may be used on the uniform of military personnel, firefighters, police officers, and members of patriotic organizations. The flag should never have placed on it, or attached to it, any mark, insignia, letter, word, number, figure, or drawing of any kind. (Including, I'd guess, writing your name on one, just as a certain US president did not too long ago.
